History

The original Central School was dedicated in 1875 in downtown Shelby in the Central Park area. Later Shelby Central High School was built as an addition to Central School in 1901 which faced East Main on the corner of Main and High School Avenue. That building was later replaced by the new Shelby High School built in the years 1924-1925 which was behind Central High School at the end of Park Avenue along the three way intersection of Park Ave, Mack Ave, and High School Ave. That building was added onto in 1938, 1951, and 1969. The old Central High School was later demolished in 1950 and replaced by the current Central Elementary School built in the same year. Then in 1965 the current Shelby Senior High School was built on W. Smiley Ave. located next to Sunset Dr. and the Shelby YMCA. When the present school was built the old school bell from the 1875 Central High was installed near the front entrance to the senior high. At that time the 1924 Shelby High School was turned into a junior high school and the windows were switched out for a combination of glass block and smaller window panes. Currently plans are in the works for new facilities to be built along State St. or Kuhn Rd. The Shelby City Schools Board of Education adopted the plan to build two new buildings, one 9-12 high school and one K-5 elementary building. The current Shelby Senior High School would then get the fate that its predecessor did and be turned into a 6-8 junior high school after minor renovations are made to the building. After the failure of the first bond issue the plan has been re-worked to build a new 9-12 high school and then have a 6-8 middle school in the current senior high. The current middle school would be demolished and Central Elementary would be closed and used as storage/offices. The remaining elementary buildings (Auburn and Dowds) would be used as K-5 buildings which would include the reopening of Russell. Shelby soon will be getting new schools

Yearbook

Shelby High School Yearbook staffs have been producing a yearbook since 1913. The book was originally called The Tatler but has changed over the years to the Scarlet S. Sometime within every 4 years a book is printed with red and gray being the predominant colors in order that every class has at least one book in the school colors.

Whippet Theatre

The Whippet Theatre is a very active group of students involved in musical theater. Whippet Theater hosts a winter show held in the Shelby Middle School Auditorium as well as a spring show or revue held in the David A. Jones Little Theater at Shelby Senior High School.

Shelby Whippet Band

The Shelby Whippet Band has been around since 1927 by Maurice Davis (Director 1927-1938). Russell Kroger took over in 1939 and was followed by Jack Luth in 1941. The modern era Shelby Whippet Band was formed in 1945 by Dwight Sommerville (Director 1945-1983). The band incorporated many synonymous elements during the 1950s such as "The Trot" and "The Shelby Line". These two elements are probably what most people will say they remember about the band. The Shelby Flag Corps were added in the 1970s under the direction of Lynn Love who continues to be the flag advisor today. After the retirement of Dwight Sommerville in 1983, Jack Gray became the director and served until 2000. Jack Gray was followed by Lisa Baker, with associate/head marching director Bryan Day and assistant director Tim Mayer. The band continues the many great traditions of the past while moving ahead into the future.

Alma mater

The Shelby High School Alma Mater is an arrangement of [Far Above Cayuga's Waters].

Come Let's Sing with happy voices,

Lift them to the sky.

Filled With Pride each heart rejoices,

True to Shelby High.

Join the chorus,

sing her praises,

sing them o'er and o'er.

Ever stand our alma mater,(Pause Measure)

Shelby Evermore!

Fight song

"Red and Gray" ([Washington and Lee Swing]) arrangement taken from Washington and Lee University.

Oh when the red and gray fall into line

We're gonna win this game and that's a sign

We're gonna fight, fight, fight for victory

Until our name goes down in football history

We're gonna shout, shout, shout for every game

And the result will always be the same

Among the best* you'll surely hear the name (Hear the name)

Shelby High!
